About the Summer Camp

The camp is hosted in July with the option to select one week to participate. Each week offers the same programming activities (at different levels, depending on prior camp experience) for students to learn Swift coding on an iPad. First- and Second-year campers will explore coding concepts in Apple’s Swift Playground app, while Third year campers will explore app design concepts, design an app prototype in Keynote, and could participate in a showcase experience to pitch their apps. Families have the choice to participate either in-person or virtually. The Camp is free to any Montgomery County Public School middle school students.

2025 Camp Dates

July 14 – 18, 2025, July 21 – 25, 2025
9:00 am – 12:30 pm

  • Basic Level

    First-time campers will be introduced to basic coding concepts using Learn To Code 1 in Apple’s Swift Playground.

  • Intermediate

    Second-time campers will expand their coding skills using Learn to Code 2 in Apple's Swift Playground.

  • Advanced Level

    Third-time campers will be introduced to app design concepts, create a mobile app prototype in Keynote and participate in a culminating Student Showcase event.

The camp is free to any Montgomery County Public School middle school students.

Campers have the choice to attend an in-person camp at Montgomery College or a virtual camp via Zoom.

FAQs

  • Go to montgomerycancode.com and register online by clicking on the 2025 application. Registration begins in April.

  • Middle school students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grades are eligible for the free summer camp.

  • Campers will have a choice to attend one (1) full week of either in-person or virtual camp session.

  • Monday – Friday, July 14–18, 2025, 9 am – 12:30 pm

    Monday – Friday, July 21–25, 2025, 9 am – 12:30 pm

  • The virtual camp is ideal for students who learn best in a virtual environment or feel more comfortable participating in the camp from their home. The Basic and Intermediate levels will be offered.

    Families will pick up and drop off their iPad at the ignITe Hub at Montgomery College.

    Limited seats will be available for the virtual camp.

  • None. Swift is an easy to understand and learn programming language. Campers will learn to code with Swift playgrounds, an app designed for the iPad.

  • iPads will be provided to all campers.

  • Yes. New this year, students will be assigned to a basic, intermediate or advanced level based on the number of MCC summer camps they have attended.

  • Each instructor and assistant will undergo a background check per MCPS guidelines prior to being part of the program. Onsite coordinators and classroom instructors will be wearing black Apple Swift t-shirts.

  • Families are responsible for providing transportation to the in-person camp at Montgomery College. This may change.

  • Drop-off will take place in the central lobby of each building with Onsite Coordinator present to check-in the students and walk them to the classroom. Families will get this specific information from the Onsite Coordinator.

  • Each session will have one teacher and one assistant for a maximum of 25 students per session.

  • Students will each receive a free camp t-shirt. Monday through Thursday, students will work with their iPads using the Swift Playgrounds app under direction of the instructors. On Fridays, part of the day will continue as instruction time and part of the time will be geared towards class discussions. A light snack will be provided.

    At week’s end, each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

  • No, the iPads will be needed by students on the next day of camp.

  • Camps will be held in-person Weeks 1 and 2 at all 4 campuses.
